The Ancestors

I'm delighted to share this latest piece which is part of a new collection for an upcoming solo show later in the year. At 100 x 100cm this piece that has come together over a period of months.

"The Ancestors" delves into the perpetual burdens humanity carries, reflecting on the ongoing saga of displacement driven by poverty, famine, homelessness, and war, echoing a history where mankind seemingly fails to learn from past transgressions, particularly those rooted in colonialism. The veiled faces serve as a poignant reminder of the silent battles endured by many, overlooked and unheard. They encapsulate the myriad individuals who have sought solace and opportunity in foreign lands, burdened by the weight of their heritage and familial ties, perpetually striving for a sense of belonging.

The tears cascading down these faces not only signify personal anguish but also symbolize the collective sorrow of a people displaced by forces beyond their control. The intricate layers of the artwork metaphorically mirror the intricacies of the human experience—the intertwined narratives, shared hardships, and the enduring resilience that persists in the face of adversity.

As observers engage with this piece, they are prompted to contemplate their connection to the collective unconscious, recognizing the shared humanity uniting us all. This invitation extends to confronting the realities of our past, empathizing with the silent struggles of others, and celebrating the resilience that enables us to anchor ourselves amidst the turbulent currents of change.

Blue River Under a Red Sky

The dramatic contrast between the fiery sky and dark blue and white below creates a striking visual impact, symbolizing the juxtaposition of hope and hardship, light and darkness. Inspired by the concept of the collective unconscious, this artwork delves into the enduring legacy of generational trauma – from forced migration to famine, war, and homelessness – all of which leave their indelible mark on the human experience. Yet, amidst the turmoil, there's a glimmer of hope. In some cultures, the red sky is seen as a promise of a new and better day, a beacon of light guiding us towards a brighter future.

In Memoriam

The Icon Factory Gallery and Studio - Guardians of Dublin’s Artistic Soul

Dublin mourns the loss of a beacon of artistic vibrancy – The Icon Factory and Studio. These creative sanctuaries were not merely spaces; they were living testaments to the power of art to inspire, uplift, and unify. Today, we celebrate the legacies of these institutions that, despite their closure, continue to echo through the streets of Dublin.

The Icon Factory: Nurturing Creativity, Fostering Community

Founded as a not-for-profit initiative in 2010 by Barney Phair a New York businessman from Dublin and artist Aga Szot from Poland, The Icon Factory was a testament to the power of community and collaboration. This iconic space served as a haven for artists, a stage for expression, and a melting pot of diverse talents. The visionaries behind The Icon Factory were also the creators of the renowned Icon Walk panels. This ambitious initiative turned the narrow passages and alleys into a vibrant canvas, showcasing the diverse and captivating narratives of Dublin’s artistic community despite lack of city funding.

Aga Szot: A Living Installation of Creativity

Aga Szot, transcended the traditional boundaries of an art studio. For over a decade, Szot graced Dublin with a living installation, painting in her studio window for all to witness. This immersive experience brought art to the streets, blurring the lines between creator and observer, fostering a sense of shared creativity that captivated passersby. Szot’s performance became a symbol of the studio’s dedication to breaking down barriers between art and the public, turning Dublin into an evolving gallery of expression.

Kevin Bohan: Icon Walk Mural Project

The Icon Walk Mural Project, overseen by the skilled artist Kevin Bohan, further amplified this transformation. These once-disregarded laneways stand testament to the power of community collaboration and the ability of art to breathe life into forgotten spaces, drawing tourists and locals alike to explore the rich tapestry of stories embedded in the heart of Dublin.

The Silent Goodbye: A City Mourns

In the wake of their closure due to eviction, it is disheartening that the continued loss of artists spaces seems to be met with such indifference. The silence surrounding their departure is a stark contrast to the vibrant echoes of creativity that once emanated from these spaces. The city has lost a crucial component of its artistic heartbeat, and the absence is felt deeply.

As Dublin says its silent goodbye to these pillars of creativity, let us remember the impact they had on our lives, our streets, and our collective spirit. The Icon Factory and Studio were not just spaces; they were the beating heart of Dublin’s artistic soul. May their legacies inspire future generations to cherish, nurture, and fight for the artistic sanctuaries that breathe life into our communities.

Join us for End of an Era, an exhibition by Aga Szot on 24th and 25th of November.

Sunday 26th November: Icon FactoryGoodbye Gathering.

In the quiet moments

between my larger paintings, I find solace in creating these delicate works on paper. They're my little creative sanctuaries, usually kept just for me. However, with the Icon Factory closing its doors in a few weeks, I felt inspired to share these intimate pieces with you all.

I am thrilled to announce that I am releasing a special selection of original works on paper!

Each piece carries a piece of my heart and creativity. What makes this even more special is that 25% of every sale will go towards supporting the Icon

Factory project, a cause very close to my heart.

These unique artworks are priced between €60 and €80, making them both accessible and cherished

additions to any art collection. Please note, the frames displayed on the wall are for display purposes only.

I believe art has the power to inspire and connect us, and I'm incredibly grateful to be able to connect with people through my passion. Thank you for being apart of this journey with me. Your support means the world.

ICON FACTORY WILL CLOSE ON 30th NOVEMBER

I am writing to express my deep sadness and profound disappointment upon learning about the closure of the Icon Factory in Dublin.  I have come to regard the Icon Factory not just as a place but as a vital and cherished part of Dublin's cultural landscape.

The Icon Factory, run by dedicated volunteer artists and operating as a not-for-profit organization, has been a beacon of creativity and artistic expression in our city for the past 13 years. It is not merely a gallery; it is a testament to the unwavering passion and commitment of artists who have selflessly devoted their time and talent to support their fellow creatives. The Icon Factory's mission, focused on nurturing art and culture rather than profit, has enriched the lives of countless individuals, myself included.

Over the years, the Icon Factory has become a symbol of Dublin's vibrant artistic community. It has provided a platform for emerging artists, a haven for art enthusiasts, and a source of inspiration for anyone who has had the privilege to step through its doors. The impact it has made on Dublin's cultural scene is immeasurable, and its closure leaves a void that will be profoundly felt.

It is disheartening to think that such a valuable institution, which has given so much to our city, is facing this unfortunate fate. In times like these, it becomes evident that businesses, both big and small, must recognize the importance of supporting cultural and artistic initiatives.

The closure of the Icon Factory serves as a poignant reminder of the need for collaborative efforts between businesses and the artistic community. Together, we can ensure that the spirit of creativity continues to thrive and enrich the lives of Dublin's residents and visitors alike.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved with the Icon Factory for the incredible work you have done over the years. Your dedication to fostering art and supporting artists has left an indelible mark on Dublin's cultural heritage. While the closure of the Icon Factory is undeniably a loss, I remain hopeful that the spirit it embodies will find new avenues of expression and support in the future.

URGENT: GALLERY/studio CLOSING

We are saddened to announce that The Icon Factory is facing closure soon, and there are no signs of finding a new home in Temple Bar to continue and expand the incredible Icon Walk project. Unfortunately, this is just another heartbreaking addition to the long list of artist studios and galleries that have been forced to close.

Who are they?

In 2010, Dublin witnessed a truly remarkable transformation. Thanks to the intervention of the talented artists from The Icon Factory, the once-neglected laneways in Temple Bar, which were once plagued by filth, discarded needles, and an overwhelming sense of neglect, were completely revitalized.

These visionary artists, fueled by their passion and some private funding, turned this filth into captivating and informative works of art, showcasing the beauty and creativity of our beloved city.

These amazing artists, who are all volunteers, fearlessly reclaimed the once-abandoned and forgotten laneways, making them accessible and enjoyable for both locals and tourists alike. Through their creation of the Icon Walk, they paid tribute to the Icons of Irish literature, music, acting, and sport.

Thanks to the artists' magical touch, these laneways have been infused with a newfound sense of warmth, affection, and care, breathing new life into them like never before. The Icon Walk has become a beloved attraction, cherished by both locals and tourists. It is still lovingly maintained by the dedicated artists from The Icon Factory. Notably, this project has been endorsed by UNESCO and comes highly recommended by the ever-increasing number of daily walking tours, as well as renowned travel guides like Lonely Planet and Trip Advisor.

What Can We Do?

Although there may be a general sense of apathy when it comes to protests, there is something you can do from the comfort of your own home. Whether you are a Dubliner, a visitor, or a tourist, you have the power to make a difference. We urge you to raise your voice and contact Irish politicians, Dublin City Council, and the Dublin City Arts Office. Let them know that the city of Dublin must step in and provide assistance in finding a new home for the Icon Factory. Together, we can help preserve this invaluable cultural gem for future generations to enjoy.

As a Dubliner I am tired of the continued loss of culture in my home.

Thank you for your support,

Anthony
