Tips for buying Art

Trust yourself

"I purchase a piece of art when I can, and the one rule I follow is to buy work I connect with and fall in love with."

You don't need expert knowledge before owning a piece of art, so follow your instinct. What art do you like looking at, and can you imagine yourself living with. Is it colourful, abstract art? is it landscapes, portraits, photography, drawing, printmaking or sculpture?

Sign up for newsletters of artists and subscribe to galleries. This allows you to see what you like. You can find out more about the artists, get previews of new works, and even get some initial discounts and freebies.

I can't afford original art

Original art is more affordable than you think. Limited-edition prints can make a great first purchase. These offer far better quality and originality than you find in items that are mass produced. Smaller original works can also be very affordable and make a wonderful statement. Find local artists, follow and engage with artists worldwide on instagram. When purchasing a piece of art, engage with the artist, there's always a story to tell later.

I can't go into a gallery.

It can be intimidating to enter a gallery but remember, it's also a place of business where simple financial transactions occur. Most Art Galleries carry a range of works at different price points. Don't be afraid to discuss what you like and your budget with a gallerist, and do ask about a payment plan if you find a piece you love but can't afford at this moment.

Do you own a business?

Art placed within a business adds to the well being of both clients and staff. You may be allowed to offset the cost against tax and qualify for depreciation on your art purchase.. Some countries allow this for people who have a home-office.

*Contact your country's revenue service or ask your accountant.
